REFLECTIONS

LYLE: I wrote a glorious Chorale in the English tradition which got the film off to a stunning start. Pat simply said, "Wow, this is fantastic."  The director John Schlesinger loved it too, hired me an authentic English boy's choir, and remarked on how clever and knowledgable of English tradition we were. I set a biblical Psalm in the English classical tradition which impressed the Brits greatly. The editor got it too. He timed the opening credits so that the peak of my choir piece coincided with the appearance of the "music by" credit.

When jazzers were at war with disco (as if that were the real war) I found common cause with Gloria Gaynor and the sentiment of "I Will Survive." I fucking loved that cut and still do. I used the guitar parts in thirds at the end of “This Is Not America” from that cut because I knew and loved them. It was a tribute and no critic caught it because they don't listen that long or deeply into anything, I stole from that cut because one has to listen to the end to catch it. The guitar parts I wrote for Pat at the end of “This Is Not America” were taken directly from that Gloria Gaynor track because I listen to the end of every argument before I speak, as Atticus Finch and so many real people taught me.
